About Valencia

Spain's third-largest city is a sun-soaked Mediterranean gem — famous for its architecture, paella, vibrant culture, and a quality of life that makes it one of Europe's most liveable cities.

Getting Around

Valencia is supremely walkable. The city also has an excellent metro, tram, and extensive cycling infrastructure. From the city centre, the beach (Playa de la Malvarrosa) is a short tram ride away.

Food & Drink

Birthplace of paella, Valencia's food scene is world-class. Look out for arroz a banda, fideuà, fresh tiger nuts (horchata), and buñuelos. The Central Market is one of Europe's finest.

City of Arts & Sciences

Santiago Calatrava's futuristic complex is a must-see — a stunning ensemble of architecture housing an opera house, science museum, and aquarium in a former riverbed.

Practical Tips

Language: Spanish & Valencian. Currency: Euro (€). Time zone: CET (UTC+1). Tipping: not mandatory but appreciated. The airport is 15 min by metro from the city centre.

Las Fallas

We arrive just as Valencia's most iconic festival is about to ignite. Las Fallas is an explosion of fire, art, and gunpowder — declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

For days leading up to the main event, the city erects hundreds of fallas — towering satirical sculptures made of papier-mâché and wood — in every square and street. On the final night (La Cremà, March 19), they are all ceremonially burned. The Mascleta on our programme (March 13, 14:00) is a spectacular daily pyrotechnic display in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento — a wall of sound and smoke that has to be experienced to be believed.
